Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Logan

April 13, 2016

The weather is finally warming up and soon you might have to switch over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the team at Western Mechanical, Inc., there are a number of other tasks you can do to stay comfortable and save money this month.

During the in-between season in Logan, those far too few spring temps, you may use ceiling fans to keep comfy. Did you know that running your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on energy costs? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t impact your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re decreasing the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to switch according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually decrease the air temperature, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan produces you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
