When it’s a warm summer afternoon in Cache Valley, nothing feels worse than registering your air conditioner isn’t performing the way it was built to. The last thing you should have to do is schedule cooling system repair. But your HVAC is a pretty complicated system, so it can be almost impossible to find out what’s causing the issue solo.

That’s why Western Mechanical, Inc. created this guide to help you see what could be taking place with your cooling system. Below, you’ll see a couple common reasons your home is feeling uncomfortable. And while a few of these are straightforward] DIY activities, you may have to call in a pro for HVAC repair.

And if you need us, Western Mechanical, Inc. is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Cache Valley.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Off

Everyone sets their thermostat a little differently to suit their individual requirements. Yet, a number of homeowners make the mistake of setting their system to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to blow even once you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can appear like your system is distributing untreated air, when actually it’s only employing the fan more often than necessary. Change this setting and find out if things seem better.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two primary spaces to check for dirt or dust accumulation when your AC doesn’t feel like it is operating well.

Firstly, examine your HVAC filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, buildup can make it more difficult for air to move through and lower the temperature your space. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time to replace it. (And in general, you have to switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking clean, go to your external unit. Double check there’s enough clearing around it and clean up plants or debris close by. This section of your cooling system discharges the heat from inside your space. If the coils outside are blocked, you won’t be comfortable in your home.

We advise scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your unit operating properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your home. It moves between your indoor and outside units to soak up and release heat, to help your house stay comfortable. If there is a crack along that path, you won’t be cool again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in chilled air, more expensive monthly charges, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises coming from your system.

If you suspect refrigerant could be leaking, call Western Mechanical, Inc. for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Need to Be Replaced

Your air conditioner includes a a handful of essential pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is failing, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Western Mechanical, Inc. experts are trained and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you diagnose and repair any issue.

5. Your AC Needs to Be Updated

If your system is older than 10 years old, it may be time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it just won’t run as well as it once did. And it could be making your home too warm.

If your HVAC unit is more current but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it might be undersized for your living space. HVAC systems are not all the same size. An AC that’s not big enough absolutely can’t cool a space the way a properly sized system can.
